Lost in Translation

Some parts of the Bible are pretty dry reading, like those endless lists of geneologies.  But there’s good reason why those sections are in there–God isn’t random.  Here’s what we miss by reading the first 10 generations in English instead of the original language (the names are translated in the second column):

Adam                    “Man”

Seth                       “Appointed”

Enosh                   “Mortal”

Kenan                   “Sorrow”

Mahalalel             “The Blessed God”

Jared                     “Shall Come Down”

Enoch                    “Teaching”

Methuselah          “His Death Shall Bring”

Lamech                 “Powerful”

Noah                     “Rest”

Now isn’t that exciting!  It’s like a secret code.  Makes you want to study other languages, doesn’t it?
